Gluten-free or nah?

Before I head on and share my two cents I’d like to go ahead and explain what gluten even is. In general, is gluten, just a protein form that’s found in wheat, barley, rye and oats. Gluten helps maintaining the shape and gives elasticity to the dough.

If you’re new to it you’re probably wondering what the purpose of a gluten-free diet is?

A gluten-free diet concerns only to people who have a celiac disease. Now if you’re not effected a gluten-free diet shouldn’t necessarily concern you. Today, you’ll find all kinds of stuff, people will promote anything; however, not everything promoted is something that we need. If that is the case, then why are there so many products that offer gluten-free choices?

Unfortunately, I don’t have an answer to that question and I’m sure that there are many possibilities to it. But what I do have are facts to whether you should pursue a gluten-free diet, continue it or just blatantly stop it. Without wasting much of your time here are a few facts:

  1. Did you know about the celiac disease?

Stop, don’t go on google now…! Most people that are on a gluten-free diet doesn’t know whether they’re infected with the disease or not. Unless you’ve undergone a doctrinal test and learned that you have the celiac disease, you most likely don’t have any abnormal reaction to gluten. An allergic reaction to gluten can damage the lining of the small intestine. Symptoms of celiac disease include diarrhea, anemia, bone pain, and a severe skin rash called dermatitis herpetiformis.

Ask yourself does any of the above apply to me eating gluten?

  1. What am I abstaining from?

Going completely gluten-free also means to abstain from a lot of common and nutritious foods. Today, we can find gluten in almost everything such as breads, cereals, crackers, pastry goods, conventional pastas and most processed food made with amounts of gluten.

To eliminate gluten completely will add to nutritional deficiencies, hence, gluten-free products tend to be low in nutrients. Most gluten-free products aren’t rich in vitamins, calcium, iron, zinc, magnesium and fiber. On the other hand, to have a gluten-free diet you’d have to constantly double check what you’re eating. I have personally watched what I eat, but even I as a “cautious” eater, wouldn’t want to constantly see whether I can or not eat certain dishes.

So, before you take on the decision I want you to really think it through!

  1. Watch your pockets!

A gluten-free diet can be very expensive. The majority of the gluten-free products are often twice the price compared to conventional products. I underwent a gluten-free diet myself and I must say that there were positive such as negative aspects of the entire diet. What you guys should know though is that my original intent wasn’t it to go gluten-free, but instead I stayed away from wheat. As I informed myself more on what I was doing, I saw that the wheat was tied to gluten and that’s how I came about my seven-week gluten-free experience. So here are my positive experiences: First, I did lose weight and this in a significant amount. Second, I felt much lighter on my feet, which helped me to move faster while running. Third, I had gotten much leaner and didn’t feel bloated at all. Nevertheless, those weeks hit my pockets! As an example, regular gluten-free bread costs about 3 Euros for only 11 slices, whereas conventional bread can be bought for less than a euro or two. Most products were found in that range, so you can think how my grocery shopping went.. Ended up almost being BROKE lol.

So, just to give you guys some information on it. I don’t despise or trying to withhold you from a gluten-free diet, but I want you to get tested first before making the attempt. It’ll not only save your pockets, but also give you a clue on how your body responds to gluten. Finally, it’s not needed to follow every trend that the industry is trying to shovel down on us. On top of that, gluten is also found in a lot of cosmetic, hair and other dermatological products. You’d really have to go out of your way to avoid gluten completely and this can be a stretch..

 

So, sometimes it’s better to go against the grain ;)!
